Uganda Rugby Cranes will play South Africa Supa-Babas in a friendly match in Kampala on 28th and 30th April as part of the preparations for the 2019 World Cup qualifiers set for June 2018.
A statement from Uganda Rugby Union said: "SA Supa-Babas to face the Uganda Rugby Cranes XVs at Legends Rugby Club Kampala on the 28th and 30th April. A new barbarian, the inspirational Wits Captain Constant Beckerling, will captain the side with two other Witsies, lock Conor Brockschmidt and winger Daniel Kasende will be part of the touring Squad."
Uganda will play the South African Barbarians in two Tests at Legends Rugby Club before hosting South African side, Cheetahs B, on May 4.
By the time the Rugby Cranes are done with the three games, head coach Robert Seguya would have filled his notebook full of the dos and don’ts as Uganda look to push for a berth at the 2019 World Cup.
“Fans should expect better returns but put in mind that all the other sides have also stepped up their preparations,” Seguya told Daily Monitor before calling out every Ugandan to come on board in pursuit of playing at the World Cup in Japan next year.
“We also need support from every Ugandan. It goes beyond players, Union and fans but the government and corporate companies to offer timely support.”
The games will also give payers opportunity to push for places in the 35 man squad expected to navigate the Gold Cup in June. “I expect 100% from everyone. Every player must perform beyond average if they are to keep their places,” warned Seguya.
Only five members of the very successful SupaBarbarians side that defeated the Czech Republic in Prague last year will tour with the Baabaas to Uganda.
Fullback Sheldon Williamson and flanker Wikus van der Berg, who has been regulars in the SupaRugby side for the past five years, will again don the Baabaa jersey.
Williams, Van der Berg, winger Sweef Potgieter, centre Wade Worthington and loose head prop JP Olivier represented the team in Prague.
There are a host of QBR representatives, amongs others lock Jerry Sefoko, number eight Carling Forwood, props Nico van der Heever and Faf Pelser and hooker Jan-Hendrik Bosman in the side.
Veteran scrumhalf Hendrik van der Nest, who has played provincial rugby with three Unions, will share the scrumhalf duties with the talented Dudlee White-Sharpley.
