Kenya 7s squad to play in the Africa Cup 7s in Kampala on Saturday April 23, 2022 that will double up as qualifiers for World Cup and Commonwealth games was named on Thursday in Nairobi.
Shujaa will play Senegal in the opening game with hosts Uganda taking on Burundi as Zimbabwe play Burkina Faso.
Head coach Innocent Namcos Simiyu retained eight players from the squad that played at Vancouver 7s. Augustine Lugonzo of Homeboyz, Alvin Otieno of KCB and Timothy Mmasi of MMUST were added to the squad.
"I am quite confident with the performance of the boys heading into the tournament. The task is to qualify for the World Cup. For us as much as we want to qualify we also want to make a statement in Africa as the defending champions," said Namcos.
Captain Herman Humwa is aware of the challenge posed by Senegal in the first game.
"It's a privilege for most of the players to go play at the World Cup qualifiers. The World Cup is a big thing to Kenya and the goal is to qualify as we head to Uganda and maintain our status as the number one team in Africa"
"Senegal are quite a physical side we know every game will be competitive. We've been in training for a while and I am positive we will do the job from the first game."
Three medalists will qualify for the Sevens World Cup to be hosted in Cape Town in September while only the finalists will book their ticket to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games on July 29-31 at the Coventry Stadium. Kenya and South Africa have already qualified for the Commonwealth games.
The Africa sevens are making a return after missing out in 2021 and 2022 due to Covid-19. Kenya Shujaa won the 2019 edition that doubled up as Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifier.
