Kenya Sevens captain Andrew Amonde is among those ruled out for an extended period ahead of the 2017/2018 HSBC World Sevens Series.

Amonde sustained a hernia injury during last weekend’s Christie 7s with his absence leaving head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu with questions as far his forward is concerned.

“We have 12 players who are contracted and three invitational. But unfortunately, we also have injuries. Andrew (Amonde) was operated on and will take time for him to get back,” said Namcos during Tuesday's exclusive interview after the training session at RFUEA grounds.

Billy Odhiambo, who was arguably among the team's best players last season, is ruled out of Dubai and Cape Town 7s with his return date set for early 2018.

“We have Billy who got a shoulder injury which is more of a long-term injury so we will see him maybe next year.

“Frank Wanyama got an injury at Sepetuka but should be able to return soon,” added Namcos.

Namcos says Kenya 7s will go into the series with 18 contracted players with the final team set to be confirmed before Dubai 7s.

“This season we will have a squad of 18 senior players. 12 are academy players who will be dealing with Moran and act as a feeder - but we are still discussing the modalities.”

The likes of Leonard Mugaisi, Cyprian Kuto and Darwin Mukidza all of who were part of the team in 2016/2017 season are not part of the 12-man squad but Namcos says everyone has a chance to make the team.

“We’ve not finalized on the team, everyone has a chance to make the team. The challenge we had is our series starts very late and doesn’t give us room to prepare the players in conditioning."

"This year we had to start with a select few and that’s why we picked 12 from last year based on our review and we started with them in terms of conditioning and up-skilling then they still go back to play in the circuit and that’s where we will select the final squad,” added Namcos.
