Yearning to don the Kenya Sevens jersey? First make it to a local team and feature in the National Sevens Circuit.
This is one of the main conditions set by the Kenya Rugby Union who have now released a criteria to be used in selection of Kenya Sevens players for the cycle 2018 to 2020.
According to KRU, providing a clear cut pathway will ensure the identification and selection of players who will perform on the Sevens World Series while ensuring that the national team meets it set targets.
To be selected one will have to feature in atleast three of the six legs of a circuit the season before the World Series, must be 18 years and above and must be registered to a local club. With the requisite skills set, one will land in a provisional list once nominated.
A list of preselected players will be availed to the technical bench three months before the world series kicks off. Trials will follow, or contract review based on performance from the past season, or both.
From this stage, the shortlisted players will have to turn out for training regularly and will only make the bracket, based on positions, after attending 90% of training.
It does not end there as Medical condition of a player, disciplinary and criminal records, and correct conditioning will be applied to further fine tune final selection.
Size too will matter based on positions. Forwards must scale above 90kgs as inside and outside backs must be atleast 75kgs and 85kgs, respectively.
Positions in the Kenya Sevens team are up for grabs as contracts for players who featured in the just ended 2018/19 season, that included a 10-part World Series, commonwealth games and the recent World Cup, have since lapsed.
