Organisers and stakeholders of the Diani Beach Touch Rugby tournament have expressed confidence in the return of the three-day event which is poised to make its comeback in August this year.
Following a two year hiatus from its last edition in 2018, the tournament will experience a venue change and the forty participating teams are now set to converge at the Safari Beach Hotel for the showpiece event to be held from 6th to 8th of August 2021. Host club South Coast Pirates headline the confirmed participating sides which also include youth setups from as far as Nanyuki for the kids’ category.
''Basically, we are looking forward to bringing rugby back to the coast especially Diani as it's been two years without beach rugby over here. Diani is a tourism town so we hope the beach rugby is going to boost tourism and business within the local community around here,'' said South Coast Pirates team manager Kevin Amiani
The tournament will kick off on Friday 5:30 pm and end on Sunday afternoon with the Friday and Saturday fixtures being run on a ‘league’ basis while Sunday’s matches will be played in a ‘knock out’ format.
With the attendees treated to the introduction of the George Barbour Cup, the 2018 tournament would mark a decade since its inception with Roaring Forties claiming the trophy in the main cup final. Academy Warriors were crowned champions of the 2017 edition after beating Forty Thieves in a thrilling clash served by two teams drawn from the host club South Coast Pirates.
The Championship side has repeatedly underlined its prowess in touch rugby, leaving many in awe of how they have continued to claim the tournament's top accolades. In 2016, SCP I successfully defended their 2015 crown after defeating SCP II in the cup final.
